”Survey says” looks at various rankings and scorecards judging geographic locations while noting these grades are best seen as a mix of artful interpretation and data.Buzz: California renters are finally getting a break: a 24-month streak of rising rents is over and the number of empty units has hit a two-year high.Source: My trusty spreadsheet looked at rent and vacancy data for May, compiled by ApartmentList. The stats track trends statewide and in 15 heavily populated counties, using yardsticks that combine rental units of various sizes.ToplineIf you didn’t realize the crazed pandemic rental market had ended, this report is a noteworthy mile marker.Rents statewide averaged $1,946 in May – that’s a drop of 0.7% over the past year. California college professors test out AI in the classroom, even as cheating debate continues

By  ROCKY WALKER | CalMattersThis spring, as debates were raging on college campuses about the proper role of generative AI in higher education, Diablo Valley College adjunct professor Frako Loden created an assignment to see how students in her American Cinema class interacted with ChatGPT.For their final opinion piece of the semester, they were to pick a discussion question about the 1950’s movie “A Place in the Sun,” insert it into ChatGPT as a prompt, and then grade the response themselves. The AI got key details of the plot wrong in some cases, Loden said.In the film, for example, protagonist George takes his girlfriend to a lake and she falls in and accidentally drowns, but ChatGPT says that he purposely killed her there. “That may be a subtle point, but it really does figure at the end when you evaluate his character,” said Loden, “ChatGPT kind of runs rough over that and suggests that he was planning it from the start and that he’s an evil dude.”Loden’s assignment illustrate...

Asking Oakland A’s fans: What would you say to John Fisher if you had the chance?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:03:30 GMT

OAKLAND – More than one vulgar chant was hurled in Oakland A’s owner John Fisher’s direction by upset fans during a ‘reverse boycott’ at the Coliseum on Tuesday night. What would A’s fans really say to Fisher if they had a chance to talk with him face-to-face?Well, they wouldn’t use the quite same harsh language, it seems. But they would also get their point across in no uncertain terms, and urge him to do right by Oakland A’s fans.“I think if I was looking at John Fisher in the eye I’d say, ‘Please, sell it to someone that genuinely cares about our community,’” Oakland 68s member Jorge Leon said before Tuesday’s game between the A’s and Tampa Bay Rays. “Sell this team. You’re going to make a profit. Nothing wrong with that money. You have the San Jose Earthquakes.“Right now, if you took this team away, the name Fisher is going to be ruined, and I don’t think his mom Doris wants that. I would say just sell it now and just be done with it...

Standing before a computer monitor in a courtroom in The Hague in 2020, a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court zoomed in and out on a detailed 3D digital reconstruction of the city of Timbuktu. She moved around the interactive map through squares and markets, zooming past renderings of city buildings, eventually descending to street level. There, she played a video that showed a Malian rebel leader holding a whip and escorting two cuffed men to an open area, then ordering the men to kneel and whipping them before a crowd of bystanders, including several children. It was a vivid opening to the war crimes and crimes against humanity trial of Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz, a member of the Ansar Dine Islamist group, which took over swaths of northern Mali in a 2012 coup. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Advanced Micro Devices has revealed a new artificial intelligence chip in its race to compete with rival chipmaker Nvidia in supplying the foundation for a boom in AI-fueled business tools. The semiconductor company, based in Santa Clara, California, described its new MI300X chip as “the world’s most advanced accelerator for generative AI.” It’s expected to attract interest from big cloud providers such as Amazon or Microsoft, but AMD hasn’t specified which cloud provider might use it. CFRA senior equity analyst Angelo Zino predicted this month that that AMD’s MI300 processor “will see significant interest from cloud providers and vie with NVIDIA’s Grace Hopper Superchip.”“AMD’s stronger partnership with Microsoft should also drive upside, as it is reportedly cited to be developing a custom processor chip that Microsoft will use for AI workloads,” Zino wrote. AMD CEO Lisa Su demonstrated the new technology at a showcase event in San Francisco on Tuesd...
