(KSNF) — A fungal disease targeting corn crops is moving across the Midwest and Great Plains, according to a report from researchers at Kansas State University.Phyllachora maydis, also known as "tar spot," first appeared in Indiana and Illinois in 2015, according to plant pathologists at Purdue University. Farmers spotted it in Nebraska for the first time in 2021, and in Missouri, Kansas, and South Dakota during the last growing season."It's a very aggressive disease compared to some of the other diseases we deal with like southern rust, or gray leaf spot, or northern corn leaf flight. It moves very, very quickly. I've seen pictures from the Midwest where the infection begins, and seven days later that field is completely shut down," said Southwest Missouri agronomist Brian Bunt.Hummingbirds are headed back to the Midwest The fungal disease attacks leaf tissue in corn and can rapidly deteriorate the plant. New bill takes aim at Texas program blocking driver license renewals over unpaid traffic tickets AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Texas program that allows judges to block driver license renewals over unpaid traffic tickets will face possible changes, and even repeal, this legislative session. It comes after a KXAN investigation revealed more than 980,000 current court orders, as of Oct. 2022, sent to Texas Department of Public Safety vendor OmniBase to block drivers from getting their license renewed.  Already, more than 445,000 Texans can’t get their license renewed or replaced if they are flagged under the state’s Failure to Appear and Pay program, according to DPS data. The system, critics say, leaves some of the state’s poorest drivers in debt, without a license for years, and at risk for more charges – and even jail time – if they get on the road. Nearly 1M drivers at risk of losing licenses. Are you one of them? “I think a cynical person can say this just looks like a way for them to make money,” Bernal said. “This is not a street crime. [These are] traffic tickets. [These are] park...

Letters: Finding the right mayor in a large field of candidates Finding the right mayor in a large field of candidatesRe: “Mike Johnston for mayor,” March 12 editorialThe Denver Post Editorial Board’s endorsement of Mike Johnston for mayor is a blatant continuation of the past 12 years of Michael Hancock’s power alliance with wealthy business owners and lobbyists. The contributions to Johnston’s campaign are proof that the imbalance of power would continue to the detriment of the needs of the masses. As an owner of a commercial property with small business tenants and a community equity activist in Globeville for many years, it is another betrayal of promises, passions, and stakeholder investments of time and energy in low-income neighborhoods such as Globeville. I fear that with Johnston as mayor, the least-resourced neighborhoods will continue to bear the brunt of the most egregious problems in the city: homeless encampments, crime, drugs, non-existent basic infrastructure, toxic pollution, and more. Denver needs a...
