Editorial: Antioch police text scandal tests mayor’s leadership

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 22:46:05 GMT

The newly disclosed racist, sexist and homophobic texts exchanged by members of the Antioch Police Department are vile. The boasting about shooting Black men with rubber bullets and kicking one man’s head like a “field goal,” admissions of falsifying police reports and claims that bigoted language can be bandied around in front of supervisors with no repercussions are abhorrent. The cops who sent the messages or signaled approval should not be carrying a badge and gun. They should have no place in law enforcement. But even they are entitled to due process. Not all of them have equal culpability. And if their rights are not respected, the city risks undermining the ongoing criminal and internal affairs investigations into their behavior, which would set back the quest for racial justice.Which is why City Council members, especially Mayor Lamar Thorpe, need to step back and let investigators do their work — and stop making politically charged comments that could jeopardize the outc...

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Drivers were urged to use caution when navigating the streets of Fort Lauderdale on Friday after days of unrelenting rain left roads underwater and forced the closure of one of South Florida’s largest airports.A flood warning was expiring, but the National Weather Service warned motorists that water-covered roads could still be a hazard. Meanwhile, officials at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport planned final inspections to assess the readiness of the airfields even as Friday’s forecast called for a few showers and possible storms. He, along with airport officials, advised travelers to check with their airlines before heading to the airport. All across F...
