Yankees Notebook: Clay Holmes on another dominant run after early season struggles

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:21:56 GMT

When Clay Holmes endured a few rough outings early in the season, neither he nor his manager panicked. The Yankees reliever allowed seven earned runs over his first 10 innings while adding two losses and two blown saves. After commandeering the Yankees’ closing role last season, the stretch hardly met expectations. But Aaron Boone pointed out that a some of those appearances featured poor luck, and Holmes felt close to being the pitcher who earned his first All-Star nod with 29 straight scoreless outings last season.“I was giving up some runs, but deep down, there was still some confidence,” Holmes said Tuesday. “I knew kind of where I was at, and that things were kind of going to turn, so it’s one of those things where it is baseball. Just being a good evaluator of kind of where you’re at is big. And I think I’ve gotten better at that throughout the years. And I knew my sinker was close. I knew my delivery was close. And it was just a matter...

By PATRICK WHITTLE (Associated Press)Roger Payne, the scientist who spurred a worldwide environmental conservation movement with his discovery that whales could sing, has died. He was 88.Payne made the discovery in 1967 during a research trip to Bermuda in which a Navy engineer provided him with a recording of curious underwater sounds documented while listening for Russian submarines. Payne identified the haunting tones as songs whales sing to one another. He saw the discovery of whale song as a chance to spur interest in saving the giant animals, who were disappearing from the planet. Payne would produce the album “Songs of the Humpback Whale” in 1970. A surprise hit, the record galvanized a global movement to end the practice of commercial whale hunting and save the whales from extinction.Payne was cognizant from the start that whale song represented a chance to get the public interested in protecting an animal previously considered little more than a resource, curiosi...

Red Sox notebook: No RISP, no reward

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:21:56 GMT

Despite some messy innings from Kutter Crawford and Justin Garza at the beginning and end of Tuesday night’s 7-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies, it’s not the Red Sox pitching staff who should be fidgeting on the hot seat amidst the team’s recent struggles.Since May 17, the starting rotation owns the fifth-best ERA (3.60) in the Majors, with two earned runs or fewer in 18 of their last 25 games, and the bullpen owns the ninth-best ERA (3.65) since May 16.This stretch of agonizingly close games is almost entire due to a subdued lineup (and poor defense). 11 of their last 17 games were decided by one or two runs. Five of their last eight games were decided by one, including each of their previous three, all of which were extra-inning contests.Over their first 13 games of the month, the Red Sox left 103 men on base. They’re averaging 7.83 stranded runners per game, up from 6.88 in May, and 6.6 in April. Conversely, their average runs scored per game has plummeted e...

A day after the Orioles selected the contract of catcher Mark Kolozsvary when they placed first baseman Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list with vertigo, they first optioned Kolozsvary to recall infielder Joey Ortiz, their No. 5 prospect according to Baseball America, then designated the 27-year-old backstop for assignment to select right-hander Reed Garrett’s contract. I kind of want to get it done as fast as possible.”Ultimately, South Station Tower will feature 685,000 square feet of office space and 166 luxury residential condominiums. The transportation hub also will see major enhancements with a new train concourse area, and the size of its bus center doubled. The first phase of the decades-long project, which star...
