PHOENIX (AP) — The darkest path often presents as the easiest one, a facade funneling into a trap.Tyon Grant-Foster saw the lurking danger behind the illusion but refused to detour no matter what life threw in his way.As a child surrounded by a world of gangs, drugs and crime, he chose the light of a basketball court. When two near-death experiences threatened to take away the game he loved most, Grant-Foster leaned into his faith, the winding path landing him in a starring role at Grand Canyon University.“You never question God’s path he has for you because everyone’s path is different,” Grant-Foster said. “So just because my path is hard and other people it isn’t doesn’t mean that it’s less important or mean that you give up. I had hard times, but it’s what makes me who I am today.”Grant-Foster’s impact has been massive in his short time at Grand Canyon. The 6-foot-7 senior guard’s 20.9 points per game rank 13th nationally and he’s second on the team with 6....

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — If a December matchup between the top two teams in the NFL didn’t provide high enough stakes, the NFL MVP could be decided Monday night when the San Francisco 49ers host the Baltimore Ravens.Niners quarterback Brock Purdy comes into the game as the favorite to win the award in what would be a remarkable rise from the final pick of the 2022 draft to MVP in 2023. Another impressive performance on the big stage might be enough to wrap it up.Lurking close behind is Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who has the second-best odds to win his second career MVP, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. And if the quarterbacks slip up, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has the fifth-best odds to win the award.“Are you trying to get me in trouble with those two guys?” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said when asked to pick a candidate from his team. “That’s the only reason I wouldn’t overly comment on either one of them because I don’t want them to cancel each other out. ...

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Fifteen Israeli soldiers have been killed in combat in Gaza over the weekend, the Israeli military said Sunday, while tentative efforts continued on a deal for another exchange of hostages for Palestinians held by Israel. As Christmas Eve fell, smoke still rose over Gaza from the fighting, while Bethlehem in the West Bank was hushed, its holiday celebrations called off.The mounting death toll among Israeli troops — 154 since the ground offensive began — could erode public support for the war, which was sparked when Hamas-led militants stormed communities in southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 and taking 240 hostage. The war has devastated parts of Gaza, killed roughly 20,400 Palestinians and displaced almost all of the besieged territory’s 2.3 million people. The Health Ministry in Gaza said 166 people were killed in the coastal enclave over the past day.Israelis still largely stand behind the country’s stated goals of crushing Hamas’ governing and m...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Recalling Jesus’ birth in a stable in Bethlehem, Pope Francis in a Christmas Eve homily said that “the clash of arms even today” prevents Jesus “from finding room in the world.” The pontiff presided Sunday over the evening Mass attended by about 6,500 faithful who took their place amid the splendor of St. Peter’s Basilica behind rows of white-clad prelates.“Our hearts are in Bethlehem, where the Prince of Peace is once more rejected by the futile logic of war, ” the pope said, referring to the war sparked by Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 rampage and hostage-taking in Israel. As Mass began, a statuette of the Christ child was unveiled before the altar bedecked in greenery and white flowers, and children representing all corners of the globe placed flowers around a gilded throne.Francis, draped in white robes, led the Mass standing at the foot of one of St. Peter’s grand columns.Recalling that Jesus was born during a census meant to reinforce King David’s power, Franc...
